Obituary for Imogene E. Hanigan

Imogene E. Hanigan, 88, of rural Oswego, passed away at 5:20 p.m., Friday, December 28, 2018 at the Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons.

She was born on April 28, 1930 at Pittsburg, Kansas to Walter and Vera (Hesson) Smith. She grew up at Pittsburg and attended schools there graduating from Pittsburg High School in 1948. She played the cello while in junior high and high school. Imogene then attended the Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg and earned a degree in education.

Imogene taught in Labette county at the Hyatt school for two years and at Labette City school for two years.

She and Robert Hanigan were married on August 25, 1952 at Bentonville, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1980.

She then taught for one more year at the Labette City school before becoming a homemaker. She also helped her husband out on the family farm. In 1984 she became a certified nurses aide and worked at the Oswego nursing home for a year and then at Elmhaven West Nursing Home for 16 years. She then worked at the Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus part time for 10 years. She then became a Certified Medication Aide and worked part time at Woodridge Estates in Parsons. She later retired but continued to volunteer at nursing homes to provide care for the residents.

Imogene enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, growing flowers, collecting angels, Werther’s Original candy, and anything purple. She attended the Zion Hill Church at rural Oswego and the Bartlett United Methodist Church. Imogene served on the Labette County Election Board as an election worker and was a member Labette County Extension. She loved her faithful companions, Turki and Lacey.

Imogene is survived by three sons, Bill Hanigan, and his wife, Sandy of Oswego, John Hanigan, and his wife, Cheryl of Bartlett, and Ernie Hanigan, and his wife, Karen of Parsons; five daughters, Debbie Hanigan of Parsons, Becky Czapansky, and her husband, Tim of Oswego, Donna Hanigan of Olathe, Laura Hanigan of Oswego, and Anita Hanigan of Olathe; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; her sister, Ilene Everett of Girard; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Imogene was preceded in death by her son, Ron Hanigan; two brothers, Clarence Smith and Kenneth Smith; and two sisters, Pat Yankee and Wilma Workman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Reverend Tom Heflin officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 Wednesday evening.
