Obituary for Shelby Bridgewater, Jr.

Shelby Bridgewater, Jr., 90, of Parsons, passed away at 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.

He was born on November 25, 1928 at Parsons to Shelby and Venie (Neal) Bridgewater, Sr. He grew up at Parsons and attended Douglass and Parsons Schools.

Following his education he went to work at Gribben Motors for several years. He then moved to Wichita where he worked as the Head Custodian on the night shift at Roosevelt School for a number of years before moving back to Parsons where he worked at urban renewal and then at Peabody TecTank as a machine operator until his retirement.

Shelby played the drums in a musicians union band called the “Swingsters” for over 17 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Musicians Protective Union and the Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church in Parsons. He enjoyed music, working on his cars, lawnmowers, and traveling with his wife.

Shelby and Earline Warren were united in marriage on August 5, 1956 at the Morgan Ave. Christian Church in Parsons. She survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, Shelby is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mildred Edison of Parsons, Irene Houston of Parsons, Vera Landis of Parsons, Gertrude Tucker of Parsons, and Patricia Warren of Parsons; his brother-in-law, LeRoy Warren, Jr. of Wichita; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hannibal Bridgewater and Gwyn Bridgewater; and his sister, Elva Clark Thurman.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Pastor Riley Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home 112 N. 26th St. P.O. Box 942 Parsons, KS 67357.
