Obituary for Phyllis Marie (Markham) Hammans

Phyllis Marie (Markham) Hammans, 80, of rural Erie, passed away Saturday night at 11:20 p.m., February 23, 2019 at her family farm.

She was born on December 6, 1938 in Neosho County on the family farm across the road from Bethel Cemetery to Verle Ansel and Ethel Mae (Hazen) Markham. Phyllis married Arden Allen Hammans on March 21, 1957 at the home of Reverend Torrence in Erie. Arden preceded her in death on January 10, 2018.

She is survived by her four children; Linda Jean (Hammans) Wickizer of rural Erie, Leo Allen Hammans, and his wife, Charlene of Erie, Laura Marie (Hammans) Lunceford of Greenwood, MO, and LaDonna May (Hammans) Sturgeon, and her husband, Leon of Dewey, OK; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Phillip Eugene Markham, and his wife, Mary Etta of Erie; two sisters, Janet Louise (Markham) Woodworth, and her husband, James of Stark, Verlene Kay (Markham) Novak, and her husband, John of North Port, FL; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her husband by her parents; a son-in-law, Randy Wickizer, Linda’s husband for 30 years in Bartlesville, OK.

She lived in Neosho County all of her life. She attended country schools; Passum Trot, Stark Grade School, and Kimball School. She then attended Grant Rural High School where she played in the band for all four years and she graduated in 1956. Following her graduation she worked on her parents farm until she and her husband got married.

She was a homemaker and worked at Tradex which she and Arden ran in 1972. In 1973 she started dispatching and doing office work in the Neosho County Sherriff’s Office. She and Arden also started running an ambulance service with volunteers that lived in the Erie city limits and did that for a couple of years. She then worked in the Neosho County Clerk’s office for a couple of years until the Neosho County Appraisers office was split in 1977 where she worked as office manager until her retirement in 2001. She and Arden then farmed and cared for cattle and calf pairs.

Phyllis enjoyed all of her family. She also enjoyed oil painting, working with flowers, quail hunting with her husband, training bird dogs and horses.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2019 at Bethel Cemetery near Erie with Phillip Markham, Phyllis’s brother, officiating. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home from 6 to 7 Thursday evening. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home 113 S. Main St. P.O. Box 182 Erie, KS 66733.
