Obituary for Phillip Jesse Porras

Phillip Jesse Porras, 71, lifelong Parsons resident, died at 1:30 A.M., Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Labette health, following a long-time battle with Parkinson’s.
He was born August 23, 1947 at Parsons, a son of Concha (Hernandez) Vaughn. He was raised in Parsons and attended school here. He was drafted in the U.S. Army after he graduated high school and served in the Vietnam Conflict. Upon his discharge he returned to Parsons and worked a short time at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant. He later went to work at the Coors Valley Distributors where he worked as a route supervisor for more than twenty years. He later was employed at Blair Trailors and Ducommun Aero Structures. While he worked at Coors he attended the Labette Community College and received an Associate’s Degree.
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He always took time to help others, was a mechanically talented man who also practiced gunsmithing for many years. He loved working in his woodshop, building beautiful projects for others. He was a proud German Shepard owner and a very proud grandfather. His children and grandchildren were the highlight of his life. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include: one daughter – Stacy M. Smith, and her husband, Scott, Dennis, KS;
two sons – Anthony P. Porras, Parsons, KS, Fernando J. Porras, and his wife, Brooke, Topeka, KS, seven grandchildren – Shayla Smith, Olathe, KS, Stormy Lay, and her husband, Paden, Dennis, KS, Gracelyn Porras, Stillwater, OK, Gabryel Porras, Lawrence, KS, Gabe Porras, Topeka, KS, Hudson Ramirez, Topeka, KS, Parker Ramirez, Lawrence, KS; one great-granddaughter – Macey D. Lay, Dennis, KS, one sister – Mary Lou Perez, Parsons, KS. He was preceded in death by his mother; and his grandparents – Espedito and Clotilide Hernandez.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the Memorial Lawn Patio with Fr. Curtis Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Military Honors given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until service-time at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at Parsons where Phillip’s son, Fernando, will speak on behalf of the family at 10:30 in honor of his father. Memorials are suggested to the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars or to the Wounded Warriors Project. These may be left at the funeral home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
